Zeke McKeown Media
Brighton Speedway Kart Klub was back in action this past Thursday night, as we hit the last week in June, action on the track is heating up with the weather. The fireworks started a few days early and 37 karts signed in the back gate as drivers and crews prepped their machines to get ready for battle.
Box Stock 1 division was first to roll on the speedway for their feature event with #39 Lucas Wannamaker and #68 Gunner Ellis starting up front of the 7 kart field. Hard on the go pedal Wannamaker wasted no time to secure the 1 spot, followed through by #11 Bentley Fulton and #29 Deegan Sudsbury – the trio had a great race as they picked through traffic, Sudsbury found the line around the midway point of the race as he moved himself by Fulton and set his sights on the Wannamaker bumper. White flag out – Sudsbury pounced on the opportunity and drove it hard off corner 2 to the inside of the #68, threaded the needle around a couple lapped karts and parked it in victory lane. 1st Deegan Sudsbury, 2nd Ellis, 3rd Fulton, 4th Wannamaker, #05 Liam Baldwin and #24 Calvin Celovsky finished the running order.
Hailing out of Picton Ontario #07 Conor Vancott and Roslin’s #48jr Knoxin Wells led the Rookie 1 class to the green flag, with Vancott using the inside line and pulling to the lead early. Multiple restarts over the 10 lap event – the Greg’s Truck and Trailer #07 of Vancott was able to keep control and all 4 wheels glued to the dirt and pointed in the right direction – unlike one of our officials lol. Checkers out for the Vancott machine, Wells for 2nd, #15 Charlotte DeWal 3rd and #87 Weston Mitts crossing the line 4th.
Junior Sportsman 1 started their 10 lap feature with #15 Liam Pakenham and #19 Bentley Davidson on the point. But it was 3rd place starter #01 Blake Gregory on a mission running a nice clean line and able to move by the #19 and the #15 in short work to catch the clean air. Gregory held it steady, kept the Scott’s Haulage #01 at the top of the leaderboard and drove it straight to victory lane, Davidson and Pakenham traded up positions and paint before ending up with #19
and then #15 on the scoring tower.
A group of 5 Box Stock 2 competitors fired up and hit the little oval – #77 Max VanDyk and #92 Race Turner controlled the pace as they rolled out of corner 4 and punched the loud pedal. VanDyk held the inside as 3rd place starter #29 Lily Walters charged to the outside into corner 1 and made her way around VanDyk on the cushion for the top spot. There on out Walters kept it smooth and steady as the rest of the field made the Tilt-A-Whirl at the county fair look like a Sunday drive. One last Round-D-Round it was Walters at the top of the podium #37 Ella Wannamaker 2nd, Race Turner 3rd, VanDyk 4th and #797 Luke Cuthbertson finishing off the running order in 5th.
Rookie 2 lit the fire in their methanol burning engines as they pulled off of the grid with #54 Rae-Lynn Branscombe and #2 Liam McPeak at the top of the lineup. Branscombe with a great start had the advantage as they blasted down the frontstretch and into corner 1 followed through closely by The County Butcher Shop sponsored machine of McPeak. Hard on to the backstretch McPeak got the run as he floated out of corner 2 outside of the #54 and made it stick moving to the lead, as Branscombe filed in line. A nice clean race with only 1 slow down had McPeak with the HUUUGE win, give 2nd to Branscombe, 3rd to Reagan Grimmon, and rounding out the running order Baltimore native #10 Hanna Merry.
As the racetrack lights brightened up the fading sunlight, the Junior Sportsman 2 division ran down the backstraight and through corner 3 and 4. #99 Bryce Massey and #31 Brody Davidson were on point – Massey made it 1st into corner 1 as a hard charging #91 Jackson Veenstra and points leader #20 AJ Peeters shuffled in line after him. Veenstra hooked the Vanderlaan Building Products ride to the inside and squeezed by Massey with Peeters hot on the bumper to the 2 spot. An intense battle of cat and mouse ended with the Peeters machine getting sent to the rear of the field for a caution flag, with only a couple of laps to go the #91 of Veenstra was free and clear to set sail to victory lane. #629 Thomas McGale jumped to 2nd, Peeters salvaged a 3rd, Massey 4th and #31 Davidson in 5th.
Junior Restricted and Stock Lite under the lights for their 20 laps of action – Sunnyside Acres II sponsored #18 Elliot Stacey and Wuis Brothers sponsored #70 Finley Mahoney lining up a fast 7 kart main event. Stacey with the drive off the low line picked up the spot as they rolled into corner 1, point leader #14 Holden Paul and #1 Coleson Gregory tucked in line. Stacey had the kart to beat as a yellow slowed the field and stacked them back up – Stacey, Gregory and Roslin’s Nolan Chatten hard off of corner 4, Gregory with the gear on the low line got the advantage and out drag raced the Stacey Racing ride before corner 1, picking up the lead. Put it on lock as the Gregory crew celebrated in victory lane, 2nd to Elliot Stacey, #89 Kolby Ellis a strong 3rd, #9s Cooper McKeown, Holden Paul, Finley Mahoney and Nolan Chatten ended his night pitside.
The heat will be on – Thursday July 13th as kart racing resumes on the little oval. Please
