The official kick-off to summer was a thriller at Brighton Speedway on Saturday night.
Fans filled the stands and 75 cars dialled in as Patterson & Son’s Ground Works and Campbellford Chrysler presented the Lawn’s We Do 360 Sprint Cars, Late Models, Thunder Stocks, Mini Stocks and Comp 4s.
In honour of late dirt track legend Bob ‘Barefoot’ McCreadie each division ran nine lap heat events. Barefoot, The Master of Going Faster passed away on Wednesday at the age of 74.
Checkers Rain for Rand
In their first of six trips to Brighton Speedway this season the 360 Sprint Cars kicked off the 25-lap event with a spectacular 4-wide salute to fans. No. 13 Evan Reynolds and No. 84 Tyler Rand led the field of 12 sprints to green. With a new motor under the hood, Rand wasted no time surging to the front on the fourth time by. The driver from Picton was flawless as he soared through the turns with No. 12DD Darren Dryden hunting him from behind. Determined to reach the winner’s circle Rand flew to the finish first with Dryden in second. Hard charger No. 15 Ryan muscled through the field from eighth to third. Turner’s teammate No. 9 Liam Martin held his own to take fourth and Reynolds placed fifth.
Baldwin Brings Home the W
No. 46 Brandon Mowat was hooked up throughout Vanderlaan Building Products Late Model’s 30-lap main event. Starting fourth, Mowat bit down on the inside line, took the lead and was unstoppable. The Brighton driver looked like he was well on his way to victory as he put fellow veteran drivers No. 5 Steve Baldwin and No. 57 Charlie Sandercock through their paces to catch him. A caution slowed the action and on the re-start Baldwin drove hard on the outside passing Mowat with three laps to go. The two-time consecutive Late Model champion sent it to victory lane with Mowat forced to settle for second. Sandercock finished third with hard charger No. 3 Nate Rinaldi in fourth and No. 77 Caley Weese fifth.
Ramsay Rides to Checkers
No.18 Kyle Anderson and No. 17 Ethan Humphry took a full field of 23 Brighton Automotive Thunder Stocks to green in the 20-lap caution-filled affair. No. 01 Kyle Gregory snapped up the lead on lap 5 as Anderson battled back hard to regain his top spot with No. 03 Justin Ramsay chasing them down in the rearview. It only took two more trips around the 1/3 mile oval for Ramsay to secure the lead and duke it out with No. 0 Tyler French to the finish line. Ramsay rode to victory lane with French in second. No. 26 Brock Gregory placed third, Anderson fourth and No.72 Doug Anderson fifth.
Bailey Books it to Victory Lane
The Bill’s Johns Comp 4 Division was led to green by No. 19 Tara Dunkley and No. 24 Travis Fox-Conner. As hard as the leaders tried to maintain it they were no match for No. 44 Tommy Bailey and No. 15 Josh Bogaard. The pair treated race fans to a stellar chase for checkers in the 15-lap feature. Determined to score his first season victory in a hunt for his third consecutive championship, Bailey booked it to victory lane with Bogaard in second. No. 42JR Aiden Fletcher finished third, No. 3K Shawn Knowlton was fourth and Fox-Conner fifth.
Severn Scores Double Wins
No. 12 Caleb Severn undoubtedly had the best night of anyone as he made two trips to victory lane on Saturday night. In a make-up feature from the washed-out May 11th event, Severn pounced on the top spot on the lead lap and never relinquished the point for 15 laps of the Bill’s Johns Mini Stock race. No. 22 Tyson Gregory finished runner-up, No. 10 Travis Mclean third, No. 25 Lawrence Evenden fourth and No. 72 John South fifth.
To close out the night, Severn turned around and did it again, leading the entire 15-lap affair from start to finish. Gregory took home another second, Mclean secured another third-place finish, No. 41 Landon Mutch was fourth and No. 2 Trevyn McCrillis was fifth.
Up next JD Electric and Reid’s Mobile Tire Service presents the Vanderlaan Building Products Late Models, Bainer’s OilGARD Anti Rust Canadian Modifieds, Brighton Automotive Thunder Stocks, Bill’s Johns Comp 4’s, Quinte Septic Stingers and the Gord’s Water Vantastics.
