Polesitter No. 5 Steve Baldwin picked up his third win of the season at Brighton Speedway on Saturday night.
Coming off a victory in the Northeast Late Model Alliance race at Cornwall Speedway last Sunday, the reigning division champ rode on a rail for all 30 laps of the Vanderlaan Building Products’ make-up event from May. Newly minted points leader No. 57 Charlie Sandercock pushed hard on the inside on Turn 3 to move into second past No. 151 Brian McDonald and chased Baldwin down. A flat tire forced Sandercock to the pits at the halfway point and even though he rejoined the back of the field, he pitted again soon after. Baldwin flew to the winner’s circle with McDonald in second. No. 46 Brandon Mowat placed third, No. 05 James Seymour fourth and No. 41 Ryan Lambert was fifth.
The Bills John’s Comp 4s were up next on the night’s race card presented by Redneck Auto Parts. No. 61 Ryan Branscombe and heat winner No. 15 Josh Bogaard led the field to green in the 15-lap affair. Branscombe was the car to beat for half the race until Bogaard pushed to the inside through Turns 1 and 2 to secure the lead. Bogaard booked it to victory lane for the second time this season ahead of Branscombe. No. 42JR Aidan Fletcher earned a hard-fought third place, No. 24 Travis Fox-Connor was fourth and No. 10 Travis Mclean fifth.
Heat winners No. 0 Tyler French and No.03 Justin Ramsay brought a full field of 25 Brighton Automotive Thunder Stocks to the green flag for the season’s most exhilarating 20-lap main event. The pair went door handle to door handle as they tossed the top spot back and forth for much of the caution-riddled feature. Both chasing their fourth wins of the season, the division leaders battled each other with everything they had and No. 26 Brock Gregory close behind. With three laps to go, Ramsay snapped up the lead for the final time. He crossed the finish line ahead of French, Gregory, No. 72 Doug Anderson and No. 97 Dave Barrett.
The remaining race action ended after beloved Thunder Stock driver Bill O’Hara suffered a tragic medical emergency while loading his car following the feature event. The Speedway suspended the event out of respect for the driver and his family. The rest of the features will take place at a later date. Brighton Speedway extends its sincerest condolences to Bill’s family, friends and racing family.
Up Next Monument Group host the Lawns We Do 360 Sprint Cars plus special guest driver NASCAR and short track legend, Kenny Schrader in an open modified event. The race card also includes the Vanderlaan Building Products Late Models, Brighton Automotive Thunder Stocks, Bill’s Johns Mini Stocks and the Quinte Septic Stingers. Front Gates are open at 5:00 pm with an opportunity to meet Kenny Schrader until 6:00 pm. Racing begins at 7:00 pm and tickets are available at the front gate.
