Gregory dominates 20th Danny Reid Memorial; season champs crowned
By: Nicole Kleinsteuber
The final points night of the season at Brighton Speedway saw four division champions crowned, and Canadian Modified driver Shawn Gregory capture the 20th annual 50-lap Danny Reid Memorial race.
The program presented by QBT Excavating and John’s Equipment featured Late Models, Canadian Modifieds, 4-Cylinders and Stingers.
Late Model driver No. 5 Steve Baldwin secured his fourth consecutive division championship, No. 40 Ron Wadforth scored his third straight Canadian Modified crown, No. 42 Aidan Fletcher won his first 4-Cylinder career championship and No. 95c Chris Lammle topped the Stinger standings. No. 0 Tyler French was declared Thunder Stock season champ during last weekend’s Labour Day Classic.
Gregory Wins Danny Reid Memorial
No. 40 Ron Wadforth and No. 25 Greg Belyea led a field of 16 Bainer’s OilGARD Anti-Rust Canadian Modifieds to green in the 20th annual Danny Reid Memorial on Saturday night. The pair went wheel-to-wheel in the crown jewel event held in memory of former K5 driver Danny Reid, who passed away while competing in the division in May of 2005. No. 1 Shawn Gregory and No. 32 Doug O’Blenis proved to be the pair’s toughest competitors on the night. Following one of several restarts, Gregory slingshot into second and on lap 14, he slid into first on the inside of turn 1. Wadforth, O’Blenis and Belyea battled three-wide coming down the front stretch as they tried to catch Gregory. O’Blenis and Belyea came together going into turn 2, pushing the 25 off the track, bringing out another caution. When the action resumed, Gregory continued to run the wheels off his machine and parked it in Empey Tire Victory Lane. O’Blenis, Wadforth, No. 12 Caleb Severin and No. 51 Mike Freeman followed.
Mowat Motors to Win #5
At the drop of the green flag No. 46 Brandon Mowat jumped on the lead from his second starting position and took off. Hunting down what could have been his first division championship, Mowat drove his 46 machine on the rails throughout the entire 30-lap Vanderlaan Building Products Late Model affair. With his fourth consecutive crown on the line, No. 5 Steve Baldwin muscled from eighth in pursuit of a top 5 finish. Mowat crossed the line first to finish a mere five points behind Baldwin for the championship. No. 05 James Seymour placed second with Baldwin third, No. 77 Caley Weese fourth and No. 41 Ryan Lambert fifth.
McCrillis Makes It Rain
It only took No. 2 Trevyn McCrillis four laps to pass polesitter No. 24x Travis Fox-Connor in the 15-lap Bill’s Johns 4-Cylinder feature. McCrillis pushed out into the lead and was unstoppable as he sought his first dirt car career win. In his rearview, two top competitors, No. 42 Aidan Fletcher and No. 22 Tyson Gregory, in a tight points battle, chased the crown. McCrillis parked it with Gregory in second. Fox-Connor placed third, No. 1 Coleson Gregory fourth and No. 37 AJ Peters fifth. Fletcher finished eighth to secure his first championship, only 20 points ahead of Tyson Gregory.
Pickell Parks It
No. 12 Shane Vale led the Quinte Septic Stingers to green in the 12-lap main event. He was flawless throughout the race until No. 93 Jorden Pickell found an opening with four laps to go. Pickell cruised to victory lane with Vale runner-up. No. 95c Chris Lammle was third, No. 18 Brian Cross fourth and No. 9 Cooper McKeown fifth.
